Hephaestus

There is no one common history about Hephaestus - the lame god of fire and metal-working. According to one mythological theory he was a son of Zeus and Hera. He was the most brilliant crafter in the earth and Olympus. Things he forged were full of life and beauty. Birds forged by Hephaestus were looked like alive, people were like the real people and it even seemed that wind blows in his works. Though, Hephaestus was also the ugliest god of Olympus.

According to one theory Hephaestus was thrown down the earth by Zeus. Zeus threw him away once he found out that he is not a son of him. Hera had born Hephaestus as a revenge for Zeus for birth of Aphrodite. She had born him from her hip after she touched a magic flower. Zeus threw Hephaestus away and he damaged his legs as he felt. Since that time Hephaestus became lame with both legs.

There is also another point of view. According to that point of view Hephaestus was lame and weak inborn. Hera was afraid of having such son and so she had thrown him away to the sea. Though, baby remained alive and was brought up by goddess of ocean. Hephaestus remained there till the day he turned eighteen. By that day he forged the most beautiful throne of gold.

He sent that throne as a gift for Hera. Hera was greatly impressed with that throne and so she set down it. Once she did it, she appeared to be chained to the throne with the thinnest though the strongest chains. And no one except Hephaestus was able to set her free. So, Hephaestus was let to get back to Olympus in exchange for Hera's freedom.
